John 4

But the time is coming and is already here when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.  The Father is looking for anyone who will worship him that way.  For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.

~John 4:23,24

True worship is that that comes from everything inside of you.  It doesn't matter if it is with instruments, with sound systems, with music ministers, or anything like that.  It matters that you worship in spirit and in truth.  Do we know what that means?  Really?

What is worshiping in spirit?  I'm not really sure.  Maybe it means that my spirit, my being, my thoughts and my ways are pointed towards God.  Not that I sing the greatest songs, but that with my whole life I give glory to God.  That sounds pretty good - and pretty difficult.  Maybe that's what it means.

What is worshiping in truth?  I'm not really sure.  Maybe this means that a true worshiper is someone who seeks truth for God's glory.  Someone who doesn't sit around in lies and deceit.  Someone who finds truth, seeks truth, and discovers truth and knows that God has revealed himself in some way because of the truth he has made available.  I don't really know.

What I do know is that I often don't really worship in spirit and truth.  More like I worship in building, and song, and employment.  These are good worship tools and environments, but they are bad motivations.  It isn't true worship.
